Summer is drawing to a close but there’s still plenty of sunshine to come, so now’s a good time to make the most of the long days and get in some exercise before winter takes hold. Here are some tips for keeping yourself healthy and well while you work out.
Stay hydrated
It might seem obvious, but make sure you drink plenty of water. If you wait until you feel thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated. It’s a good idea to drink a glass or two of water before you exercise, as well as during and after your workout.
Time it right
February is usually NZ’s hottest month. During these dog days you might want to exercise in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat. You don’t want to end up with heatstroke.
Cover up
It goes without saying but, if you’re exercising outdoors, make sure you wear sunscreen. There are plenty of sweat-proof options on the market.
Stay cool
Go for a jog or brisk walk in the shade. You’ll stay cool but still feel like you’ve had a workout. Or, if it’s wet outside, head out for a run in the rain. It’ll be cool and refreshing, we promise.
Child’s play
If you’ve got kids, get yourself involved in their games. Break out the water balloons or sprinklers and see who can get the wettest. You’ll have so much fun you’ll forget you’re exercising.
Enjoy yourself
Most importantly, have fun. Exercise has many benefits and shouldn’t feel like work. Find a workout or exercise that suits you and make it a part of your daily routine.
